How do I secure my Elxis site?
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 28 May 2006

This is a very serious question that unfortunately does not have a simple answer. Security is a combination of measures taken by you but also on server level.

Here we will concentrate on measures you can take. We hope that your hosting company has taken all the necessary measures to secure the server and especially your Elxis web site.

There are some simple steps you can take to secure your Elxis site:

  • Set the right properties on your directories. Do not unnecessarily leave directories open with CHMOD set at 777. Elxis provides you a CHMOD Tool at the administrator control panel which you can use to easily change mode to any file or directory within your Elxis site.
  • When you are not making changes to configuration.php, set its permissions to 644
  • After install, delete the directory "installation". Dont just rename it!.
  • Secure your /administrator directory using HTTP access control.
  • Use complex password. At least 6 characters containing symbols, numbers and letters. Remember passwords are case sensitive.
  • Enable FTP access over files and set file modes to 644. These files will be writable by Elxis but not from PHP (file owner should be the local user).
  • Install and use Elxis on a Linux server

Editing Content
Written by Administrator
Sunday, 28 May 2006

Editing content with Elxis is easy. It is as easy as editing an MS Word document.

Elxis comes with one of the best WYSIWYG editors in the world. The TinyMCE, developed from Moxiecode. Of course that editor, was adapted in order to work with Elxis, but it retains all its functionality.

More over, you can control its appearance and decide what features you want to be active. To do so, connect to the administration panel and go to Mambots -> Site Mambots -> TinyMCE WYSIWYG Editor. From there, you can control all the settings of the editor.

How content is organized?
Written by Administrator

In Elxis you can organize content in two ways or with a combination of these two ways.

Hierarchical structure

Content is organized in Sections -> Categories -> Content Items.
You can have as many Sections you need. Sections contain only Categories. Categories contain Content Items. Content Items are the "articles" of your site.

Using this structure, you can benefit the most out of Elxis, because there is a number of menu item types that let you view and display content based on this. For example you can create menu items of type "Table - Content Section", "Table - Content Category", "Blog - Content Section", "Blog - Content Category", etc. That way you can easily display all the Content Items that belong to selected categories or sections.

Autonomous Pages

Autonomous pages are Content Items that do not belong to a Section/Category structure. They are independent. You can think of them as single HTML pages. You can create as many as you need and then organize through the proper menu structure. In other words you can create menus and menu items linked to autonomous pages, in such a way that the organization of menu structure reflects the organization of the content.

Combinations

You are not restricted to one the other way of organizing content. You can use both methods at the same time.
